Kite Point is the iconic sound-side kiteboarding destination in Cape Hatteras β€” the spot where kiteboarders are welcomed and celebrated. Located along NC Highway 12 between Avon and Buxton, just south of Canadian Hole, it offers world-class conditions across all skill levels: shallow forgiving water for beginners, flat conditions for freestyle, consistent depth for progression, and enough space for everyone. On a good SW day, dozens of kites fill the air against the Cape Hatteras landscape. This is what Hatteras kiteboarding looks like.

Power Line Awareness

The main hazard at Kite Point is the power lines running along NC Highway 12 behind the launch. Position yourself with your back to the highway so your kite launches toward the water, not the road. During setup, orient your kite facing the sound. Guide deliberately during launch β€” kite up and immediately out over the water. This becomes second nature quickly, but on your first visit take a few minutes to watch how experienced riders manage it before you rig.

For Every Skill Level

  • Beginners: One of the best learning spots on the East Coast. Shallow, soft sandy bottom β€” you can stand up anywhere. Many kite schools use Kite Point for lessons. The forgiving environment lets you focus on building skills rather than managing conditions.

  • Intermediate: Ideal for upwind progression, transitions, and first jumps. Consistent conditions and spacious water mean you can focus entirely on skill development.

  • Advanced: Freestyle paradise. Flat water delivers clean takeoffs and predictable landings for rotations, handle passes, and trick progression. Consistent lift, room to work.

  • Foilers: Excellent for kite foil and wing foil. Short to medium mast (60–85cm) depending on tide and experience. Consistent depth and clean water make foil progression straightforward.

Kite Point & Canadian Hole β€” Know the Difference

Kite Point and Canadian Hole sit just minutes apart and serve different communities. Canadian Hole is a legendary windsurfing spot with a long-established community β€” kiteboarders are discouraged there out of respect for that tradition. Kite Point is where kiteboarders are welcomed. The arrangement works well and both communities get world-class conditions on their home turf. If you are a kiteboarder, Kite Point is your spot β€” no reason to look elsewhere in this stretch.

Community & Atmosphere

The vibe at Kite Point is open and welcoming β€” visitors are embraced as part of the community, not treated as outsiders. On good wind days you will see students taking first lessons alongside pros training for competition. The large riding area means there is room for everyone, and the shared passion for kiteboarding creates genuine camaraderie on the beach. Ask questions, share conditions beta, and enjoy being part of one of the best kite communities on the East Coast.

Conditions, access rules, permits, and fees change. Always check current conditions, posted signs, and Cape Hatteras National Seashore rules before you ride, and ride within your ability.
