Askins Creek is a peaceful, lesser-known sound-side access point at the southern end of Avon β€” located about 100 yards past the last home in the Askins Creek neighborhood. The residential setting gives it a completely different character from the major public launches: calm, unhurried, and genuinely local. When Ramp 38 is open, the protected creek conditions and proximity to Avon’s services make it a solid choice for intermediate riders who want good water without the crowd.

Wind Directions

Askins Creek shines in N and NE wind β€” directions that come straight off the sound and create clean, consistent conditions for this location. S and SE are workable but more cross-shore. Avoid W, NW, and SW as these are offshore to side-offshore from here. The creek location provides natural protection that makes the water noticeably calmer than more exposed sound spots in the same wind.

Residential Respect

This is an active residential neighborhood with vacation rental homes nearby. Good neighbor behavior is not optional β€” it is what keeps this access point available. Keep noise levels down, do not block driveways, dispose of all trash properly, and arrive and depart at reasonable hours. The local community’s tolerance of wind sports access depends entirely on visitors respecting the neighborhood feel.

Space & Practical Notes

  • The rigging area is small compared to major public spots. Arrive early on good wind days β€” if it looks full, use a nearby alternative rather than overcrowding.

  • Walk-on access is how most riders use this spot. The walk from the small parking area is short and manageable with kite gear.

  • Canadian Hole’s restroom facilities are nearby if you need them before or after your session.

  • Central Avon β€” with the island’s only chain grocery store, restaurants, and medical center β€” is just a short drive away.

Local Tip: Askins Creek is ideal for intermediate riders who want protected conditions without the crowd management required at busier spots. When the ramp is open and N/NE wind is running, it is often the best quiet session on the island. Check NPS status first β€” every time.

Conditions, access rules, permits, and fees change. Always check current conditions, posted signs, and Cape Hatteras National Seashore rules before you ride, and ride within your ability.
