Canadian Hole is one of the most famous windsurfing spots in North America β€” a legendary location that has drawn riders from around the world for decades. The NPS Haulover Day Use Area provides excellent facilities, the shallow flat water is ideal for all windsurf skill levels, and the wind here is as reliable as anywhere on the island. It earned its name from the Canadian windsurfers who discovered and made it famous in the 1980s and 90s. That community and tradition are still very much alive.

For Windsurfers

Canadian Hole delivers everything a windsurfer wants: consistent SW and S wind coming clean off the sound, shallow flat water that stays forgiving across all tide stages, and enough depth to sail freely without constant bottom contact. Beginners benefit from the ability to stand up almost anywhere if needed. Advanced riders have room to push speed, work on jibes, and refine technique. The experienced local windsurfing community is generally welcoming and knowledgeable β€” good people to learn from if you are visiting for the first time.

For Wing Foilers

Wing foiling has grown significantly at Canadian Hole and is generally welcomed. Wing equipment requires less space than kites and coexists more easily with windsurfers. That said, wing foilers should be especially courteous on crowded days β€” give windsurfers priority in the launch area, maintain awareness of traffic, and read the beach dynamic before setting up in a tight spot.

Crowd Management

Canadian Hole can be genuinely crowded on good SW wind days during peak season. Arrive early to secure parking and rigging space. The large parking lot fills on prime days. The beach has dedicated areas for different stages of launch and rigging β€” observe how the local community organizes the space before dropping your gear in the wrong zone. Shared beach use with families, swimmers, kayakers, and paddleboarders means extra awareness is needed near the shore.

The Name: Canadian Hole got its name from the influx of Canadian windsurfers who discovered this spot in the 1980s and made it a regular destination. The name has stuck for 40+ years and is more commonly used than the official NPS designation. If you ask anyone on the island where to windsurf, they will say Canadian Hole.
