The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Turnouts are a series of three beach access points along NC Highway 12 north of Avon, spaced roughly one mile apart. The water conditions across all three are essentially the same — shallow, flat to moderate chop — so your choice comes down to access road difficulty, rigging space, and where you are in a downwinder route. These are primarily strategic logistical points in the Hatteras downwinder network, though they work fine for casual sessions when you want a quieter alternative to busier spots.

Choosing Between Turnouts

3rd Best overall · Hard-packed sand road · Easiest to navigate · Most rigging space · Fits 4–5 vehicles · Default choice for groups and first-timers
1st Solid middle option · Spacious rigging area · Generous parking · Straightforward access · Good for groups
2nd Most challenging · Narrow access road — scout before committing · Limited parking · Can feel crowded · Best for lighter days or solo/small groups

Downwinder Logistics

When coordinating pickups, be specific — say 1st, 2nd, or 3rd. The 3rd Turnout is the default pickup point for most local downwinder runs because of its easy access and space. If you are running a shuttle, scout all three on your first visit so you understand the road conditions and can make smart calls on future sessions. These turnouts connect with Chimi House to the north and Kite Point / Avon to the south.

First Time Beach Driving? If you are new to ORV beach access, start with the 3rd Turnout. Hard-packed road, generous space, most forgiving if you make a mistake. Build your beach driving confidence here before attempting the 2nd Turnout’s narrower road.

Conditions, access rules, permits, and fees change. Always check current conditions, posted signs, and Cape Hatteras National Seashore rules before you ride, and ride within your ability.
