Chimi House is a peaceful, less-crowded sound-side access point between Salvo and Avon β€” named for the nearby Little Kinnakeet Lifesaving Station, one of the original Outer Banks rescue stations from the late 1800s. The ORV requirement filters out casual traffic, leaving you with space to rig, launch, and ride without the chaos of the major public spots. The shallow, clean sound water works for all skill levels, and the location slots naturally into downwinder routes running between the northern sound spots and Avon.

Beach Driving Essentials

  • Lower tire pressure to 15–20 psi before entering sand β€” this is not optional. Standard road pressure will bury you.

  • Engage 4WD before you hit the sand, not after you are already stuck.

  • Bring a portable air compressor β€” you need to reinflate to 35+ psi before driving on the highway.

  • Stay on marked paths to protect dunes and vegetation. Follow any posted NPS guidance.

  • Consider keeping a shovel and tow strap in the vehicle β€” soft spots after rain can catch experienced drivers off guard.

  • Keep momentum in soft sand β€” stopping can put you in trouble quickly.

Downwinder Routes

Chimi House sits at a useful midpoint in the classic Hatteras sound downwinder network. Common routes include launching at Chimi and riding south to Kite Point or the Avon turnouts, or arriving at Chimi from Salvo or northern spots as a mid-route stop. For extended north-to-south runs, it is a natural checkpoint or pickup point that the large parking area on the beach supports well.

The Little Kinnakeet Lifesaving Station

The historic station buildings visible from the launch are part of the Outer Banks’ role as the Graveyard of the Atlantic β€” built in the late 1800s to rescue sailors from shipwrecks offshore. Currently under restoration by the NPS. You cannot enter the structures, but they provide a striking visual backdrop and a real connection to the history of this coastline. Sunset sessions here are worth planning around.

ORV Permit Info: CHNS ORV permits are available weekly or annually. Purchase online at nps.gov/caha or at permit offices in Buxton and Ocracoke. Rangers patrol regularly β€” the fine for driving without a permit is significant. Get the permit before you make the drive.

Conditions, access rules, permits, and fees change. Always check current conditions, posted signs, and Cape Hatteras National Seashore rules before you ride, and ride within your ability.
