What Makes POA Special

The three narrow channels around a boomerang island create an otherworldly riding environment β€” glass-flat water, grass-lined banks, and virtually no chop even when the surrounding sound is rough. The shallow depth throughout means you can stand up anywhere. The protected channels stay calm in conditions that make everything else choppy. Precision jumps across the narrow channel gaps add an expert-level challenge not found anywhere else on the island.

Access & Exit Planning

  • Getting There: Launch from north of Salvo (around Mile Marker 46 area). Expect 20–40 minutes of downwind riding to reach POA.

  • Navigation: Know what to look for β€” the channels are not obvious from a distance. Go with someone who knows the route on your first attempt.

  • Exit Strategy: Continue downwind to Salvo, arrange vehicle pickup, or walk back along coastline if wind dies β€” possible but long.

  • Safety: Remote location means limited rescue if equipment fails. Confirm your self-rescue skills and tell someone your intended route and timing.

Essential Skills Required

  • Expert downwind navigation β€” you must know where you are going

  • Strong self-rescue β€” no nearby support if equipment fails

  • Excellent kite control in narrow channels and tight spaces

  • Solid freestyle foundation β€” this is a progression spot, not a learning spot

  • Sound judgment about personal limits and conditions

Local Tip: Do not attempt POA on your first visit to Hatteras. Build skills and local knowledge at other spots first. When you are ready, connect with local riders or shops who can guide you. Many experienced locals are happy to show newcomers the way β€” it is part of the POA tradition.

Conditions, access rules, permits, and fees change. Always check current conditions, posted signs, and Cape Hatteras National Seashore rules before you ride, and ride within your ability. Rig at the House. Ride When It’s On.

On a Soundfront Experience week, you launch from the property onto the sound in Avon β€” no parking on the shoulder, no packing up between sessions, and an air compressor and gear storage by the rigging area. Still learning? Our Immersion weeks start where you are.
