Real Slick β€” universally known as The Slick β€” is legendary in the kiteboarding world as one of the flattest, most protected freestyle spots on the East Coast. The unique microclimate created by the surrounding land formations produces glassy, smooth water even when the rest of Pamlico Sound has chop. Riders travel to Hatteras specifically to session The Slick. If you have the skills to get there, you will understand immediately why.

Why The Slick is Special

The Slick earned its name from the water conditions β€” glassy and slick even when surrounding sound has chop. Protected by land on multiple sides, the natural amphitheater creates consistent lift and predictable landings that are hard to find anywhere else. Slider parks and features attract advanced riders working on everything from first jumps to competition-level tricks. On any given peak-season day, you will find riders from around the world here.

Getting There β€” Three Options

  • Option 1 β€” Downwinder (most common): Launch from Kitty Hawk Kiteboarding and ride downwind 15–30 minutes in SW/S wind. Arrange shuttle or continue to Salvo.

  • Option 2 β€” Upwind from Salvo: Launch from Salvo Day Use Area and ride upwind/north. Requires very strong upwind ability.

  • Option 3 β€” Boat Access: Some locals and resorts offer boat transport β€” session The Slick and get picked up when done.

Etiquette & Safety

  • Respect flagged zones β€” private properties and shops mark no-kite areas. Stay clear of all flagged boundaries.

  • Watch for jet skis and powerboats at all times. They are common and require constant spatial awareness.

  • Crowded conditions demand excellent right-of-way knowledge. Know your rules before you ride here.

  • At slider features: wait your turn, watch for approaching riders, and announce your approach when possible.

  • This is not a beginner spot. Solid riding skills and excellent safety awareness are required.

First Visit Tip: If it is your first time at The Slick, consider doing a guided downwinder with a local shop. REAL Watersports and Kitty Hawk Kiteboarding often organize group downwinders that pass through. It is the safest and most social way to experience this iconic spot for the first time.

Conditions, access rules, permits, and fees change. Always check current conditions, posted signs, and Cape Hatteras National Seashore rules before you ride, and ride within your ability.
